Interview with Dana & Stephane Maitec

I'm a fashion lover, but most of this I'm a fashion photography lover. I had the opportunity to get in contact with great talented couple, Dana and Stephane.

Sono un'amante della moda, ma ancora di più sono un'amante della fotografia di moda. Ho avuto l'opportunità di entrare in contatto con una coppia di grande talento in questo campo: Dana e Stephane.

From their site: couple in the city as behind the lens, these two artists work with passion inseparable from Paris, New York and Bucharest, their hometown.

Authors and photographers and visual artists Dana and Stephane Maitec living in Paris for more than fifteen years.

The talents of designer Stephane acquired at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, combine with intense and intimate perception of Dana, entirely self-taught.

Independent photographers, they stretch their creative field between personal projects and institutional orders or private.

Found their work in private collections around the world: Australia, Belgium, China, USA, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Italy, Monaco, New Zealand, Swiss, Romania, Russia ...

Dal loro sito: coppia nella vita come dietro l'obiettivo, questi due artisti lavorano inseparabilmente con passione tra Parigi, New York e Bucarest, loro città natale. 

Autori, fotografi e visual artists, vivono a Parigi da oltre 15 anni. Il talento del designer Stephane, acquisito alla Scuola di Belle Arti di Bucarest, combina con l'intensa e intima  percezione di Dana, completa autodidatta.

Fotografi indipendenti, estendono il loro campo creativo a progetti personali e commissioni istituzionali o private.

Il loro lavoro si trova in collezioni private di tutto il mondo: Australia, Belgio, China, USA, Francia, Gran Bretagna, Hong Kong, Italia, Monaco, Nuova Zelanda, Svizzera, Romania, Russia...

I wanted for a long time a small interview, to learn about their personal concept on fashion photography directly through their words, and finally... here our little debate:

-I noticed that your models always look straight into the lens, what is the message that you like to stand out through their eyes?

Dana: I feel very inspired by strong, independent people. Men or Women. They know what they want and don't want. 

You feel their energy even if you see them from the back. I love that way of keeping their body in dignity but not arrogance.

And they like very much looking straight into your eyes when talking to you, and you trust them instantly. 

The vulnerable women are not my type, but sometimes if they have an interesting story to tell could attract me a little bit also

Desideravo da molto tempo una piccola intervista, per conoscere il loro concetto personale sulla fotografia di moda direttamente  dalle loro parole, ed ecco finalmente il nostro piccolo dibattito:

- Ho notato che le vostre modelle guardano sempre dritto nell'obiettivo, qual'è il messaggio che ti piace trasmettere attraverso il loro sguardo?

Dana: sono molto ispirata dalle persone forti, indipendenti. Uomini o donne. Quelli che sanno cosa vogliono e cosa non vogliono.

Senti la loro energia anche se li vedi da dietro. Amo quel modo di  avere dignità ma non arroganza. A loro piace molto guardare dritto nei tuoi occhi quando ti parlano, e tu ti fidi di loro istantaneamente. Le donne vulnerabili non sono il mio tipo, ma a volte se hanno una storia interessante da raccontare potrebbero anche attrarmi un pò.

-Dana: I think beauty is when you do something interesting with your life and you're very proud of that. 

It becomes sooo important and big, that everybody can read that in your eyes. 

I think we all are doing interesting things in our life, but some of us just forget this and the beauty vanishes....

We probably know to make people feeling relax and give them the opportunity to remember they are beautiful, and sometimes the result is spectacular.

The rest is about style and class. And that's another story.

-e qual'è il tuo concetto di bellezza?

-Dana: penso che la bellezza si ha quando fai qualcosa di interessante nella tua vita, e sei fiero di farlo. Diventa davvero una cosa molto importante e grande, tanto che chiunque può leggerlo nei tuoi occhi. Penso che noi tutti facciamo cose interessanti nella nostra vita, ma alcuni semplicemente lo dimenticano, e allora la bellezza svanisce... noi probabilmente sappiamo far sentire le persone a proprio agio, e gli diamo l'opportunità di ricordare che sono belli, e a volte il risultato è spettacolare.

Il resto riguarda lo stile e la classe. Ma questa è un'altra storia.

-have you a precise rule on when to use the color and when the b&w in your photos?

-Dana: Black and white pictures always born as color ones, too. But they are asking by themselves to be transformed. Could be about the drama, or about the graphic or contrast, or simply because the colors are not telling me any story in that case and I feel like I'd prefer to go B&W rather.

-hai una regola precisa su quando usare il colore e quando il bianco e nero nelle tue foto?

-Dana: Le foto in bianco e nero nascono sempre a colori. Però esse chiedono da sole di essere trasformate. Potrebbe essere per teatralità, o per la grafica o per il contrasto, o semplicemente perchè in quel caso il colore non mi dice nulla e sento di preferire piuttosto il bianco e nero.

-How important is today the combination between new technologies, computer graphics and traditional photography? Is it true that you have to do it all?

-Dana: Well, the new technology helps us a lot, as we can work in our office, sitting on a good chair and doing the retouch while we are checking the emails, going on google or even making our manicure. Yesterdays was like the same retouch, but in the dark room, standing all day long and waiting for the chemicals to do their job...No nails coloring there inside...

-Quanto è importante secondo te oggi il connubio tra nuove tecnologie, computer grafica e fotografia tradizionale? E’ vero che bisogna saper fare tutto?

-Dana: Beh, la tecnologia ci aiuta molto, lavoriamo nel nostro ufficio, seduti su una bella sedia e facciamo i ritocchi mentre controlliamo le e-mails, navighiamo su google o mentre ci facciamo la manicure. Gli stessi ritocchi che si facevano una volta, nella camera oscura, aspettando tutto il giorno che la chimica facesse il suo lavoro...lì non potevi mettere lo smalto alle unghie nel frattempo...

-Dana: As you know I am working with Stephane, my partner and husband and often we are doing the post production "in house". 

Of course it depends of deadlines and time schedules, and sometimes we just don't have time enough to do everything we'd like to by ourself.

But we pay big attention the shooting day, and we set the lights carefully and try to do everything perfect from the beginning.

We have the huge chance to always work with cinema lightings, and this helps us a lot into creating the atmosphere we want directly on the set.

Maybe that's why our subjects feel like cinema stars immediately

-Dana: Come sai lavoro con Stephane, il mio compagno e marito e spesso facciamo la post-produzione "in casa".

Naturalmente dipende dalle scadenze e tempi di esecuzione, e a volte semplicemente non c'è tempo per fare tutto come vorremmo.

Ma facciamo molta attenzione il giorno dello shooting, impostatiamo le luci con attenzione e cerchiamo di fare tutto perfetto fin dall'inizio.

Abbiamo la grande opportunità di lavorare sempre con illuminazione da cinema, e questo ci aiuta molto a creare l'atmosfera che si vuole direttamente sul set.

Forse è per questo che i nostri soggetti si sentono immediatamente come stelle del cinema
